This small town was established in 1873 as an outpost on the troubled East Griqualand border and named for Walter Harding, a judge of the Natal Supreme Court. The Harding area has copious natural resources and is a veritable environmental treasure. By 1882, the burgeoning town added a hotel to its three trading stores, an indication of its early popularity.
