Situated high (1 768 m above sea level) on the central grasslands, the small town of Hendrina lies placidly and peacefully in the shade of pine and gum trees. Named after the wife of the owner of the farm on whose land the town was founded in the 1920s, the town is the centre of both an agricultural and industrial area where vast coal-mines feed the ever-hungry power stations north of the town. The town boasts a small museum that depicts and traces the development and history of the town. Locals call the town “KwaZamokhule” (“We try to improve”)
