Hluhluwe is named after the thorny monkey rope climber, known as umHluhluwe in Zulu. Local crops include sisal and cotton and over 90 per cent of South Africa’s pineapples are produced here. The town acts as a base for people visiting the St Lucia Wetlands area and the Hluhluwe-Umfolozi Game Reserve.
Art And Crafts
Ilala Weavers: Ilala Weavers started some 20 years ago to help local men and women to support themselves and to preserve the traditional crafting skills. The crafters work from home and take their products to the centre from where they are marketed and sold. Through the years, the crafters have learnt to make new products such as lampshades, pencil dolls, salad servers and various fashion accessories. The crafters use everything they can lay their hands on to produce products of such skill and beauty that shoppers find them irresistible.
DumaZulu Cultural Village: DumaZulu (Thunder of Heaven) Cultural Village is a living museum, dedicated to the traditional Zulu way of life. Visitors can see how the Zulu people cook, brew beer, make spears and shields, and dance. The indigenous snake park and crocodile park are unusual additions, not normally found in a village. Tours are conducted through the village and accommodation is also available. The accommodation again presents a pleasant surprise. The huts in the village represent the different ethnic groupings in
Southern Africa: Xhosa, Zulu, Swazi, North Sotho, South Sotho, Venda, Tsonga, Ndebele and Tswana.
