The town was established in 1888 and the name both honours President Paul Kruger and the Voortrekker hero Piet Joubert. Nestled in the rolling foothills of the Dumbe Mountain, it played a significant part in the military manoeuvres in the area.
History And Architecture
Egode River Monument: Also known as the Peace Boulders, the monument marks the spot where General Louis Botha chose delegates for the signing of the peace treaty that ended the Anglo-Boer War.
Old Drostdy: The Old Drostdy, constructed in Victorian style, was the first British Colonial Public Building in the area, and was proclaimed a national monument in December 1980. Craftworks produced by local tradesmen are also sold here.
Luneburg: The village of Luneburg was the original settlement of the German Lutheran Missionaries in 1860. The oldest German School in Northern KwaZulu-Natal is found here. The village is situated approximately 30 km north-west of Paulpietersburg.

Natal Spa: The waters of the Bivane River springs, at the Natal Spa, are widely believed to have healing properties.
