The name harks back to when great herds of springbok populated the area. The area began to change when the white hunters and the Voortrekkers arrived. The springbok was hunted and their habitat was used for agricultural purposes.
Today, the region is covered in fields of maize, sunflowers and cotton. More recent developments include private game reserves that are reintroducing game in an attempt to restore the area to its original state.
The flats cover a vast area, from north of the Pienaars River westwards to Bela-Bela (Warmbaths) and Modimolle (Nylstroom) and north-west to Mokopane (Potgietersrus). The area offers excellent off-road motorbike and hunting opportunities.
