Mkuze

This small trade and transport centre is situated east of the Lebombo Mountain Range. Towering over the town is Ghost Mountain, its jagged heights reaching some 530 m into the sky.

Archaeology And Palaeontology

Ndunakazi Hill: The hill is found inside the Mkuze Game Reserve. Venetian trade beads from approximately 1300 AD have been found here, thought to have been brought by Arab slave traders.

Culture/Community Tourism

Etshaneni: In 1819, Soshangane, a member of the Gaza family belonging to the Ndwandwe Tribe, was forced by Shaka to flee. He fled to Mozambique and created his own chieftainship, but when he died, his body was returned and laid to rest at Ghost Mountain. It became a tradition to return the bodies of Shangaan chiefs to Ghost Mountain to be laid to rest. Local tribesmen believe that the peaks are haunted, telling of strange lights and weird sounds emanating from the mountain.

Fauna And Flora

Mkuze Game Reserve: The Mkuze Game Reserve features a diverse landscape of grassland, savannah, sand forest and riverine forest. It is home to such animals as hippos, crocodiles and various species of water birds. Well-marked hiking trails allow visitors to enjoy the sights and sounds of the reserve.
