The name of the town is derived from the Khoi-Khoi word for “cattle resting place”. Patensie is an important centre for the large citrus-, vegetable-and tobacco-farming area around it.
Adventure And Sport
Hiking, climbing and biking: The Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area lies close by and includes the Kouga and Baviaanskloof Mountain Ranges. Fynbos and valley bushveld line the valleys and plateaux that are so popular with hikers and mountain bikers. There are also ample mountain-climbing opportunities.
Water sport: The Kouga Dam supplies water to the Gamtoos area and provides excellent recreational and water sport opportunities.

The Patensie Citrus Cooperative: The cooperative is open to the public on weekdays during the packing season, April to September.
