Pofadder was a mission station, established in 1875, and named after a Koranna chief, Klaas Pofadder. The perennial spring provided white farmers with the incentive to settle in the area. The first plots in the town were officially sold in 1917. The Roman Catholic Church in the town runs a chicken farm, a dairy and a block-making enterprise that provides employment opportunities to the poor.
