This town is the largest on the KwaZulu-Natal South Coast. The town had its origins in the 1860s as it held promise as a port for coasters. The port fell into disuse when the railway line to Durban was completed. It has since become a prime tourist destination because of its beautiful beaches. It was named for Sir Theophilus Shepstone, the famous Diplomatic Agent to the Natal tribespeople in the mid-nineteenth century.
