Initially known to the Zulu population as “Ntsaba”, Alfred Eyles first named the area “The Lookout” when he built a wattle and daub mission nearby. However, after he bought the area he officially called it Southbroom, in memory of his family home in Wiltshire, England. The name was retained when it received town status in 1933.
