Wartburg

Wartburg has a distinctive German heritage dating from the 1850s when German cotton-planter families settled in the district. The Germans first founded the neighbouring town of New Hanover. When friends and relatives followed, Wartburg was established. The town’s crest tells the settlers’ story, from their arrival on South African shores by sailing ship, the naming of the town after Wartburg Castle in Eisenach, the “Luther Rose” and finally its mission statement – “Pray and Work”.
